Silt Fencing

silt fencing with compost berms

compost berms are a popular alternative
• less expensive application
• less maintenance
• compost has been proven to reduce turbidity up to 99%

Because of the weather, environmental issues, or public concern, an increasing amount of silt fencing has appeared in contract descriptions. It is easy to find a project requiring a mile or more of silt fencing installation, maintenance, and removal.

Sizing the compost material appropriately can greatly affect the amount of turbidity that is removed from runoff. When compost is screened to a 3” minus, the varying sizes of material offer different advantages. The larger material helps stabilize sloped applications by absorbing some of the energy caused from moving water. The smaller fines trap silt and other suspended material for assimilation by bacteria. Compost is really a small factory, which by nature, is designed to manage water efficiently while providing a healthy habitat.
